In an intense matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks, Stephen Curry’s fired-up performance was telling, as he helped lead the team to a narrow 120-117 victory.
The game marked Klay Thompson’s first return to Golden State since joining Dallas in the past offseason, and the night was filled with a mix of joy and tension.
Curry, usually calm, showed a side of frustration after Thompson went silent in the lead-up to the game, according to Warriors forward Draymond Green.
Green shared insights about the situation between Curry and Thompson on his podcast, The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis. He explained that Curry was supposed to make a pregame speech in honor of Thompson’s tribute video.
However, Curry decided to skip the speech, a choice that seemed influenced by Thompson’s unresponsiveness.
“By the time Steph came in the game last night he was pissed,” Green revealed. “As soon as I texted him, he called me right away and I tried to stir the pot a little bit. I’m stirring the pot, ‘It ain’t no my Splash Brother, nah.’ I’m stirring the pot.”
He further noted that Curry had tried to reach out Thompson, but after being “ghosted,” he was left frustrated.
“So I pissed Steph off, he was like yeah I talked to Klay last night because Steph was supposed to speak before the game. He was like ‘I called Raymond and told him I’m not speaking, I just need to lock in on the game, so I’m not speaking and I talked to Klay about it.’ He tried to check in with Klay about something else and Klay ghosted him, so he got pissed and here we go.”
Thompson scored 22 points and even did Curry’s iconic shimmy celebration during the game. But Curry responded with a stellar performance, scoring 37 points, six rebounds and nine assists.
Curry also added 12 points in the last quarter, hitting a crucial 3-pointer that sealed the game.
For what it’s worth, after the game, Curry addressed his decision not to speak, emphasizing that he wanted the moment to be about Thompson and his legacy with the team. He shared that it felt fitting for fans and the organization to lead the tribute.
“It’s not about me,” Curry said, focusing instead on what Thompson’s contributions meant to the Bay Area and the Warriors’ fan base.
