Stephen A. Smith makes a case for the Dallas Cowboys to attempt and get into a position to draft Shedeur Sanders and hire Deion Sanders as the HC.

The Dallas Cowboys’ season is over. The team has a 3-6 record through 10 weeks and with Dak Prescott out for the rest of the season, realistically; the team does not have a shot at making the playoffs. So it is about time that Jerry Jones and the front office begin to think about the next season and start laying the groundwork to be better.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith is certain that Mike McCarthy will not be the HC of the Cowboys next season. His suggestion to the Cowboys, wave the flag on the rest of the season and tank so that they are in a position to draft Shedeur Sanders at quarterback but the analyst has an ulterior motive behind this.
Stephen A. explained the rationale behind his words.
Ideally, this would be the best-case scenario for the Cowboys, but then again, it is very unlikely to happen because of Jerry Jones.
Shedeur Sanders is a top quarterback prospect in the 2025 Draft
Deion Sanders has coached his son since the beginning and he was by his side at Jackson State University and now at the University of Colorado. So it would be fair to think that Coach Prime would be open to the idea of becoming the HC of a team he once took the field for.
Besides, in all the programs that Sanders has gone into, he has established a winning culture and turned the programs around.
When Sanders took over the Colorado Buffaloes program, the team had won just one game. In 2023, they went on to win 4 games, and this year they were projected to finish 11th in their conference. However, they have won 7 games so far this season and that is a drastic improvement for a team that was considered a joke two years ago.
Deion Sanders is a legitimate Coach of The Year candidate. His skills as a general manager in picking the right pieces for the roster are exceptional, and he can make the Dallas Cowboys a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl.
“I believe that the Dallas Cowboys should tank the rest of the season, get the No. 1 overall pick so you can draft Shedeur Sanders and … hire Prime Time Deion Sanders as your head coach.”

There are multiple reasons why, even though this is what should happen, it will not. The 2025 Draft Class does not have a lot of good quarterbacks. So far, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders have been the standouts who have shown they can be consistent. Carson Beck’s stock has come down over the last few weeks because of his turnover problem, and Quinn Ewers is good, but he has been inconsistent.
NFL franchises would keep Ward and Sanders as their top options, and by drafting the latter the odds of landing Deion Sanders as the Head Coach go up substantially. The Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Giants are the teams most likely to draft a new quarterback in 2025 and are expected to finish with the worst records in the NFL.
Sanders’ odds of landing up in Vegas are higher than ever because Tom Brady, who is a part-owner of the team, has praised his game and mentored him on numerous occasions. He knows the strengths of Shedeur and the intangibles he brings to the table.
This would mean that the Raiders are likely the top spot to land Shedeur Sanders, but due to an anomaly, even if the Dallas Cowboys have a shot at drafting him, they will not. The team just made Dak Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Why would they utilize their first-round pick on another one? Dallas will pick a player to bolster their defense instead, or if Ashton Jeanty is available, then him.
The glaring reason why Dallas will not pick Shedeur Sanders and bring Deion Sanders as an HC board is that Jerry Jones will not let that happen. The media attention, focus of the season, and credit for the team’s success will be diverted to Coach Prime, and that is not something Jones would be a fan of.
