Former Miami Dolphins defensive back Trill Williams is making a transition from the gridiron to the squared circle.

Trill Williams spent parts of the 2021 and 2022 seasons on the New Orleans Saints and Dolphins rosters, appearing in one game for Miami in the 2021 campaign. After going unsigned for two years, the former Syracuse star has decided to turn pro in another sport.

Per Bobby Shouse of The Dive Bar Podcast, Williams has signed with the WWE following a successful tryout in the summer. It’s unclear when he’ll begin working on television, but he’ll presumably start on the NXT developmental territory.

Trill Williams also appeared in a backstage segment on NXT last night:

WWE’s two main programs are Raw and SmackDown. It’s awfully rare for a talent to join the main WWE roster unless they have valuable wrestling experience on their resume, so expect Williams to start in NXT.

Williams, who turns 25 years of age next month, was waived by the Dolphins ahead of the 2023 season. It didn’t work out in the NFL, but we’ll see how the 6-foot-1, 202-pound athlete fares in the world of wrestling.

Williams isn’t the only active professional wrestler who has also played professional football. WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg played defensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons from 1992-94 before a gruesome abdominal tear forced him to retire early.

Longtime WWE superstar Baron Corbin, who left the company earlier this month, spent time on the Indianapolis Colts (2009) and Arizona Cardinals (2010 to 2011) rosters before taking a transition to pro westling.

Roman Reigns, the biggest star in WWE right now, tried out for the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars before spending one season with Edmonton’s CFL team. And of course, Brock Lesnar left the WWE in 2004 to pursue a career with the Vikings, only to enter the UFC following his release.
