Dak Prescott flew to New York on Monday to meet with another specialist on his partially-torn hamstring. The Dallas Cowboys will likely learn that Prescott needs season-ending surgery to repair the injury.

Team doctors anticipate a four-month recovery timeline if he goes under the knife, so Prescott’s season would be over. It’s only a matter of time until Prescott is placed on injured reserve. Avoiding surgery would allow Prescott to potentially return in six weeks.

Prescott initially hoped to play in the Cowboys’ Week 10 game against the Eagles, but the MRI revealed the injury was worse than the team feared. Cooper Rush got the start in his stead and was terrible, to put it kindly. He completed13-of-23 passes for 45 yards and lost two fumbles.

Many would like to see Trey Lance start, but Mike McCarthy announced Monday that Rush will start this week against the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. McCarthy also revealed that Dallas is in the process of signing another quarterback to the roster.

Cowboys to sign QB Will Grier to the practice squad after Dak Prescott injury

The Cowboys will reportedly sign Will Grier to the practice squad, according to Newy Scruggs of NBC5. This is perhaps the most uplifting Cowboys news to break in weeks sans the injury update to budding linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

With teams permitted to carry an emergency third QB, the Cowboys were bound to make a move eventually. Lance had served in that role before Prescott’s injury. With Dak likely out for the rest of the season, Grier will step in as the third-stringer.

Grier is a fan favorite around these parts. He spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with Dallas and had a legendary sendoff in his final preseason game in 2023.

The Cowboys had just traded for Lance, so Grier was informed before the final exhibition that he wouldn’t be making the team. He was rewarded by playing every snap as an audition for QB-needy teams and he put on a show, throwing for 305 yards with two passing touchdowns and two rushing scores in a 31-16 win with Prescott calling plays.

Grier was a respected player in the locker room and his departure tugged on Prescott’s heartstrings.

“Honestly right now, my heart and my mind is with Will,” Prescott said after the win. “So it’s a tough situation, honestly. Love that guy to death over there. Plays his ass off, comes in, prepares the right way each and every day.”

Prescott might spend most of his time rehabbing away from the team, but Grier’s return will be a feel-good moment for QB1 and the locker room. The 29-year-old vet is probably the best signing Dallas could have made given the circumstances.
