The San Francisco 49ers survived against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a last-second game-winning field goal on Sunday, and added a veteran in hopes of filling the biggest weakness on the roster Monday morning.
According to a report from Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the 49ers are signing former New York Giants defensive back Nick McCloud.
McCloud, 26, appeared in seven games for the Giants this season before being released, while producing 14 total tackles and one pass breakup.
However, where McCloud may make the most significant impact for the 49ers, is bolstering one of the league’s worst special teams units.
What Nick McCloud Brings the San Francisco 49ers
According to FTN’s Aaron Schatz, the 49ers rank 30th in special teams DVOA, which could be an area where McCloud sees immediate playing time.
While McCloud will initially join the 49ers’ practice squad, his quickest path to getting on the field and seeing meaningful playing time may come as a contributor on special teams.
The remainder of this season could prove to be an audition for McCloud, who was originally an undrafted free agent. Through his first three seasons, all in a Giants uniform, McCloud has posted 85 total tackles with one interception, 1.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles.
San Francisco will give McCloud the chance to contribute on special teams and perhaps climb the depth chart at cornerback down the stretch run of this season.
