Mike Tomlin is sticking by a decision that cost theย Pittsburgh Steelersย dearly in Sunday’s win over theย Washington Commanders.
Deep in their own territory and facing a 4th-and-15 in the first quarter, the Steelers dialed up a fake punt that fell incomplete when gunner James Pierre dropped a pass.
Pierre was all alone on the sideline and would have converted a first down, but instead the Steelers handed the ball to the Commanders in the red zone. It took Washington just three plays to score a touchdown and tie the game at 7-7.
The Steelers were able to hold on for a 28-27 victory, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard pass from Russell Wilson to trade-deadline acquisitionย Mike Williams.
Though the fake punt ultimately didn’t cost the Steelers a win, Tomlin took responsibility and said it was a bad decision — but one he ultimately doesn’t regret.
“I’ll do it again,”ย Tomlin said.
Tomlin went on to praise his players for fighting throughout the game, saying he’s always willing to take chances that put trust in them.
“We didn’t execute it, so it was a bad idea, but our guys fought,” he said. “They didn’t blink. We got contributions in all three phases. We got contributions from old Steelers, like Cam [Heyward] who has been around forever. We got contributions from new Steelers, man like Mike Williams and Preston [Smith], and we’re just appreciative of all parties involved.”
