FRISCO – When it’s broke, everybody and their brother will try to fix it. And also those in New York.
In a story published Saturday, the New York Post suggests the only thing that will repair the Dallas Cowboys is … Bill Belichick.
“Jones’ Cowboys are at a serious crossroads. They’re a mess,” writes columnist Mark Cannizzaro. “They’re on the cusp of falling into the worst, most hurtful and insulting scenario of all for the attention-addicted Jones: irrelevance.”
The Post, of course isn’t the first to float this spicy suggestion. Even Cowboys owner Jerry Jones himself added fuel to the fire last Spring at the Senior Bowl when he openly dreamed about the future Hall-of-Fame coach.
Said Jones, “I could easily see us working together.”
That was nine months and five losses ago. Considering Mike McCarthy’s contract expires at the end of the season with the fact that Dallas’ season is heading South in the express lane with quarterback Dak Prescott sidelined until at least early December by a hamstring injury, and it’s easy to see why critics local and from afar are already projecting what they might look like come 2025.
By all indications, the 72-year-old Belichick is enjoying his first season not coaching in the NFL in 50 years. He’s dating a 24-year-old former cheerleader, picking apart plays as an analyst on ESPN and bathing in the waters of his New England Patriots dynasty.
Most league observers also are convinced Belichick wants to return to coaching next season, mostly in order to pass Don Shula for the most wins in NFL coaching history.
“The Bill Belichick sweepstakes will commence as soon as the season is over,” says The Post. “Dallas, which has Prescott locked up to a long-term contract and has talent, probably makes the most sense for the former Patriots head coach. Jones, too, is a big-game hunter. And, as mentioned above, he’s 82 years old. Belichick is 72 and, if he’s going to coach again, he’s not picking a team that isn’t at least close to winning quickly.
“That makes Jones and Belichick a perfect marriage.”
