The 2024 season presented a terrifying moment for Miami Dolphins fans, as Tua Tagovailoa experienced one of the most concerning concussions we’ve witnessed in recent NFL history. It all unfolded during a daring rush for a first down when Tagovailoa collided headfirst with Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, leading to him losing consciousness right there on the field. His absence was felt by the Dolphins, who dropped three out of their next four games before welcoming him back against the Arizona Cardinals.
Despite the gravity of the situation, some think it’s appropriate to spew negativity. A fan took to X with a shocking tweet wishing harm on Tagovailoa.
Stepping in to respond was Tua’s mother, Diane, who replied with poise and grace: “Good morning to everyone, even those who CHOOSE hate. As for me & my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Meanwhile, Tagovailoa is proving he’s not just back, but back with a vengeance. He delivered a sterling performance against the Bills, completing 25 of 28 attempts, racking up two touchdowns, and steering clear of interceptions, even if it ended in a narrow 27-30 loss.
Reflecting on the game, Tua shared a positive outlook: “It was a great game. We are taking a step in the right direction.
We have to keep pushing.”
When questioned further during Thursday’s media availability, Tua elaborated on the game strategy, stating, “We didn’t go into the game saying, ‘Hey, we’re gonna need you to spread the ball around.’ We just went with the mindset that this is the call.
If this is what you see, then throw; if not, then go through your progression. … And I’m glad that it worked out that way.”
The match against the Bills also sparked intrigue beyond the scoreboard. Observers noted a hesitation from the Bills’ defense to hit Tagovailoa, even in scenarios where contact seemed imminent.
Former NFL player and NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth highlighted this peculiarity on his ESPN podcast, noting, “There were a couple different times where it felt like under normal circumstances, someone would hit the quarterback. Tua scrambles, and he dives, and a player dodges him.
And once in the backfield, he’s standing there and very hittable, and I think it was Damar Hamlin decided not to hit him. … It just shocked me.”
Looking ahead, the Dolphins are set for a Monday night showdown against the Los Angeles Rams, with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET/5:15 p.m.
PT on ESPN/ABC. It’s a game that could offer more insights into the evolving dynamics of Miami’s gameplay and Tagovailoa’s continuing journey this season.
