The San Francisco 49ers fell to 3-4 on the season with today’s 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of Super Bowl LVIII.
Adding insult to injury, San Francisco All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams was ejected late in the fourth quarter. Williams got tangled up with Chiefs safety Bryan Cook at the end of a play, and while Williams was attempting to get up from the ground, Cook threw a punch at him. Williams, who is not to be messed with on the field, promptly stood up and clocked Cook in the side of the helmet with a punch of his own.
As usual, the second person got caught here. Cook was not penalized, but Williams was. The veteran offensive lineman was also ejected from the game.
Williams’ penalty didn’t cost the 49ers any yards, as there were actually offsetting fouls on the play. Chiefs cornerback Chris Roland-Wallace was flagged for a facemask elsewhere.
We would imagine that Williams will face some sort of fine at least for his helmet punch, and Cook probably will as well once the NFL reviews the play.
Overall, today’s Chiefs-Niners matchup was nothing like the Super Bowl back in February. Both quarterbacks struggled, with Patrick Mahomes throwing two interceptions and Brock Purdy tossing three.
Purdy did score both of San Francisco’s touchdowns on the ground, while Mahomes added a rushing score of his own. Kareem Hunt ran for two TDs and Mecole Hardman also had one for Kansas City.
The Chiefs are not playing well offensively–incredibly, Mahomes has six passing touchdowns against eight interceptions on the season–but it hasn’t matter thus far. They are 6-0 and once again looking like the team to beat in the NFL.
