The Las Vegas Raiders are facing an “ugly” quarterback situation, but a new report suggests they could solve the situation with a trade-deadline deal.
The Raiders have stumbled to a 2-6 record this season in part due to their inconsistent play at quarterback. Both Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew have made starts this season, but neither has made a significant impact. They have a combined to throw eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions, averaging 209.1 yards per game collectively.
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon called their quarterback situation “ugly,” noting that neither O’Connell nor Minshew look like starting-caliber quarterbacks.
“It couldn’t be clearer that both Gardner Minshew II and Aidan O’Connell are top-notch backups at best for a team that must start from scratch under center,” Gagnon wrote.
Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News suggested the Raiders could address the situation now, projecting they trade for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. Iyer suggested it could be a move for the future, allowing Fields to pair with a rookie next season.
“The Raiders have their eyes on Shedeur Sanders and other top QB prospects in the 2025 draft, but it would make sense to take a shot on Fields to pair with his former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy,” Iyer wrote. “The Steelers may not want to break up their ideal backup/starter situation with Russell Wilson and Fields, but they could be motivated to flip the latter if they get a great offer.”
Fields started six games this season for the Steelers, going 4-2, but has since gone back to the bench in favor of Russell Wilson.
