This has been a nightmarish season for the Dallas Cowboys thus far in 2024. They are sitting at 3-4 and lost two straight games. They have a gauntlet of difficult games coming up.
Dallas has the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, and Washington Commanders on their upcoming slate. Things can go down the drain fairly quickly if the Cowboys don’t turn it up a notch. But the way they’ve looked in 2024, Dallas isn’t going to be a serious Super Bowl contender.
After this campaign, there is a high likelihood that Mike McCarthy won’t be given a contract extension and the Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach.
The Cowboys have a lot of holes on their roster and could look at Micah Parsons as a key trade piece that can kickstart their rebuild.
Parsons is up for an extension and is looking to become the highest-paid defender in the NFL. Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers has that honor at $34 million a year. The Penn State product wants to shatter that, but if Dallas dishes that money out, it will handicap the rest of their team-building ability.
Dak Prescott is now the highest-paid QB in the league at $60 million a year after he inked a four-year, $240 million extension in September. They also gave CeeDee Lamb a four-year, $136 million deal ($34 million annually).
That is a lot of money and trading Parsons will get them massive value in return. One potential trade destination would be the Chicago Bears. There were rumors that Chicago was interested in Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby but both guys weren’t available.
Last year, Chicago traded for Montez Sweat in exchange for a second-round pick at the trade deadline, showcasing their willingness to give up draft assets to improve the team.
Parsons is someone Chicago would certainly have an interest in and have the draft capital to get the deal done.
In this projected trade, the Cowboys acquired a 2025 first-round pick and two second-round picks for Parsons.
One of those second-round picks belongs to the Carolina Panthers. They are one of the worst teams in the league and that pick would likely land at the beginning of the second round (picks 33-37).
Getting three high draft picks in return for Parsons would allow the Cowboys to get young talent on cheap deals in multiple key areas. They have needs at wide receiver, running back, and safety, to name a few.
Securing these draft assets would give Dallas the keys to get a jumpstart on a rebuild. In addition, the Bears have $73 million available in cap space in 2025 and would have the funds to give Parsons his monster extension.
This is a deal that would benefit both sides and help restart the Cowboys’ rebuild in 2025.
