The Golden State Warriors have hit the ground running this season, thanks in part to Steve Kerr’s strategic lineup adjustments.
Among these changes, rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis has made the most of his starting opportunities, while Jonathan Kuminga has found his rhythm leading the second unit, a role that seems to suit him better than starting.
Kuminga’s apparent comfort coming off the bench might have deeper implications, especially given the recent buzz around his future with the team.
After unsuccessful contract extension talks between the Warriors and Kuminga, trade speculation has begun to surface.
One NBA insider recently shed some light on the Warriors’ strategy regarding Kuminga’s contract status.
“The reason I don’t think they extended him is because, if this is going well this year, as they come into the trade deadline and a star player is available, they’re going to lead a package with Jonathan Kuminga,” Brian Geltzeiler said on “Steiny & Guru,” via 95.7 The Game.
Geltzeiler points to general manager Mike Dunleavy’s shrewd roster construction, specifically the collection of contracts that could prove valuable in trade scenarios.
By combining these contracts with Kuminga, the Warriors could potentially pursue a player in the $40 million range, especially with their stock of draft picks.
The contract standoff makes sense from both perspectives.
The Warriors are understandably hesitant to offer Kuminga a max contract without further proof of his potential, while Kuminga sees no reason to accept less when an All-Star caliber season could lead to a huge deal, either with Golden State or elsewhere.
As a restricted free agent, the Warriors would be able to match any offer he receives and maintain the flexibility to keep him regardless of salary cap constraints.
For now, Kuminga seems content betting on himself, a gamble that could pay off handsomely if he continues to develop.
