The veteran WR is not happy with his lack of involvement in the Dolphins’ offense.
The former star receiver, now traveling-veteran is unhappy with his new team.
Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one-year, $3 million deal (can reach $8.25 million with incentives) with the Miami Dolphins back during the offseason on May 8. At the time, it looked as if OBJ would be a reliable third option as Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle took opposing defenses’ attention. In reality, the pairing has been anything but perfect.
OBJ has only started in three games for the Dolphins. Two of those games were without Tua Tagovailoa under center – Oct. 6 versus the New England Patriots (Beckham’s debut) and Oct. 20 vs. the Indianapolis Colts. In Week 8, Tagovailoa made his return, but Beckham’s production remained the same.
In those three games, the veteran has only played a total of 11 snaps, targeted three times and has yet to bring in his first catch of the 2024 season.
The lack of involvement in the Dolphins’ offense looks to have reached the boiling point for the receiver.
During Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, the Dolphins’ X account posted a clip of OBJ preparing to take the field. The Dolphins ended up losing 28-27. Following the loss, Beckham returned to the social media post and seemingly called out his team and responded to fans questioning his production.
While the organization has not addressed Beckham’s comment on X, head coach Mike McDaniel shared the same belief as Beckham during yesterday’s media availability.
“The snaps that [Beckham] had – not targeted. A couple of them he was the primary [target] but the shell of the defense dictated it. I thought he looked as comfortable as he’s looked,” McDaniel said. “I think Tua sees that on tape. We kind of adjust to what players show us. I thought he was running the best routes.”
Beckham had knee surgery during the offseason (which delayed his 2024 debut) but it seems that has not hindered his on-field abilities, rather the veteran has not had the opportunity to show he still has some gas in the tank.
Last season, Beckham had a small but efficient role with the Baltimore Ravens. In his 14 games with the Ravens, OBJ had 35 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns. But In the playoffs, his role diminished – four catches for 34 yards in two games.
Now that Tagovailoa is healthy and McDaniels has acknowledged that Beckham’s skillset is still there, maybe the offensive wizard can bring back the 2021 run that OBJ had with the Los Angeles Rams.
Beckham will have a chance to get his first reception of 2024 when the Dolphins face the Buffalo Bills in Week 9.
