The Pittsburgh Steelers began the 2024 NFL season with a 4-2 start as fourth-year quarterback Justin Fields led the offense as QB1. But when veteran signal caller Russell Wilson fully recovered from his preseason calf injury, Fields was relegated to the bench.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team still plans to use Fields in certain offensive sets, but that plan may be derailed by an unfortunate injury update.
On Sunday morning, Fields was a surprising addition to the Steelers’ injury report with a hamstring injury.
The former Chicago Bears quarterback is now listed as questionable for the Steelers’ “Monday Night Football” matchup against the New York Giants.
According to Tomlin, Fields tweaked his hamstring during practice late in the week. Fields is scheduled for an MRI following the Steelers’ Week 8 matchup against the Giants, per NFL insider Jay Glazer.
This injury designation comes amid some speculation about Fields’ future with the organization. There are some who believe the Steelers could be looking to ship Fields before the trade deadline and capitalize on his solid performance to start the year.
Fields fueled this speculation with a cryptic social media post on Saturday.
“Patiently Waiting!!!” he wrote on Instagram.
Wilson put together a solid performance in the Steelers’ Week 7 win over the New York Jets, firmly reclaiming his position as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback. The 35-year-old QB completed 16 of his 29 pass attempts for 264 yards and two touchdowns in the 37-15 win.
