While he had meetings behind closed doors with the Lakers, JJ Redick effectively had a public job interview with his “Mind The Game” podcast alongside LeBron James. It was on those episodes that most fans realized the basketball mind that Redick has and really opened listeners and viewers up to the idea of him being a head coach.
One of the episodes that most showcased the basketball IQ of Redick — and LeBron, for that matter — was all about 3-point shooting, plays the pair had run throughout their careers and the revolution that has come along with it.
At the time, Lakers fans didn’t know that this would be a precursor to their offense months later. On Tuesday, Redick took a play he broke down in that episode and used it in-game for Dalton Knecht’s first basket of his career against the Wolves in the win.
To be fair, this isn’t a unique play necessarily. Both LeBron and Redick knew of the play and even discussed why it was called what it was. But it’s still fun/cool to see Redick take a play from this podcast and using it in an actual game.
At practice on Monday, Knecht talked about the play call, noting that it was one he believed D’Angelo Russell called.
“It was real cool to shoot my first shot and make it,” Knecht said. “I can’t remember who told me, but they said. ‘LeBron and AD made their first shots in the NBA,’ so it was real cool to have that moment.”
This absolutely won’t be the last time Redick pulls something from his podcast to the Lakers this season. Hopefully, all of those players have the success rate of his first one on Tuesday.
