Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson suffered an injury setback during the team’s practice on Wednesday.
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson suffered an aggravation of his hamstring injury in practice on Wednesday, a team source confirmed to Steelers Now, and he was held out of practice on Thursday as a result.
Wilson first suffered the hamstring injury last Thursday while preparing for the Steelers’ Week 7 game against the New York Jets. He was listed as a limited participant in both Thursday’s and Friday’s practices and was listed as questionable, but was made inactive and did not play on Sunday night.
Wilson aggravated the injury in practice on Wednesday. The Steelers were not mandated to produce a practice report for Wednesday’s session, because they don’t play until Monday night this week.
With Wilson held out, Brandon Johnson was elevated from the practice squad and played in his place. Johnson played a total of 10 snaps of offense. Wilson had played five as the fifth wide receiver the week before. Johnson played five on Oct. 6.
Wilson’s injury setback occurs as head coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that the rookie needs to show him more to get on the playing field.
“As we’ve talked repeatedly in this setting, Roman needs to work for me to really consider him,” Tomlin said. “His participation got compromised some last week. And so really, once it got compromised, I moved on.”
Wilson missed the first five weeks of the season after suffering a high ankle sprain in the first week of training camp The team’s third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan, Wilson has played in just one game through the first half of his rookie season.
Beyond the top four receivers of George Pickens, Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III and Scotty Miller, the extent of the production of the Steelers wide receivers group is that Johnson has one catch for nine yards.
Ben Skowronek, who played in the first two games before suffering shoulder injury, remains on the injured reserve list, though he is eligible to return. The extent of his injury is unclear.
