The Miami Dolphins (2-4) hope to turn their season around this Sunday vs. the Arizona Cardinals (3-4). Kickoff is at 1 PM EST at Hard Rock Stadium. But before the team looks to right the ship this weekend, general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel made a flurry of roster moves.
According to the team, veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard and wide receiver Tarik Black have been added to the practice squad. Tight end Hayden Rucci was released to make room for the moves.
Beathard (30) was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. During his eight-year career, the former Iowa Hawkeye has started 13 games, appearing in 32 with the 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s completed 60.4% of his passes for 3,886 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
Miami’s urgent need for a quarterback with Tyler ‘Snoop’ Huntley recovering from a shoulder injury is the main reason behind this signing. However, with familiarity in the system and no backup quarterbacks looking very good in Tua Tagovailoa’s absence, perhaps Beathard will find himself on the gameday roster sooner rather than later.
The other player the Dolphins added to their practice squad on Wednesday was former Texas Longhorns’ wide receiver Tarik Black (Also played at Michigan, FWIW). Black signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 as an undrafted free agent before stops with the New York Jets (2022) and Baltimore Ravens (2023). He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the summer but was shortly released.
During his four-year NFL career, Black has appeared in one game for the Jets but brings much-needed size to Miami’s receiving corps at 6’3.
To make room for Beathard and Black, Miami released rookie tight end Hayden Rucci.
