Internationals: Haaland on target in Norway win – Walker and Lewis shine for England

Erling Haaland scored and provided an assist for Norway in a 4-1 win over Slovenia, while Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis both impressed as England beat Greece 3-0.

There were only five City players on international duty on Thursday evening – here’s how they got on…

Slovenia 1-4 Norway

Erling Haaland was on target for Norway and could have had a first-half hat-trick against Slovenia.

The City striker – wearing the skipper’s armband again in Martin Odegaard’s absence –  fired a shot against the post on 26 minutes when the score was 1-1.

Prior to that, Antonio Nusa had given the Norwegians the lead after just four minutes, but Slovenia levelled on 20 minutes as Benjamin Sesko struck from the penalty spot.

Haaland restored Norway’s lead as he was sent clear by Sander Berge before slotting a low shot past the onrushing Jan Oblak with a smart left-foot finish 45 –  a 35th goal in 38 games for his country.

And he almost scored again in added time with a rising shot that was well saved by Oblak.

Nusa scored his second of the evening just before the hour-mark to make it 3-1 for Norway at the Stožice Stadium in Ljubljana.

Haaland capped a fine evening off by providing an assist for Jens Petter Hauge on 79 to make it  4-1 before the Blues’ No.9 was replaced with three minutes remaining.

The win leaves Norway joint to of League B Group 3 with Austria.

Greece 0-3 England

Kyle Walker captained England for the third time in the Nations League clash with Greece.

Winning cap No.92, the City skipper enjoyed a solid first 45, with England taking a fifth-minute lead through Ollie Watkins.

Rico Lewis – on his fifth appearance for his country – started at left-back and played a superb though ball to Watkins in first-half added time, but the Aston Villa striker fluffed his lines as he lost control of the ball and the chance went begging.

Lewis moved to right-back after the restart, with Walker moving into central defence after Ezri Konsa was substituted at the break.

And the City teenager almost claimed his first international goal when he fired Madueke’s cross on target only for Odysseas Vlachodimos to make a fine save.

The Three Lions wrapped up an impressive victory in Athens with further goals from Vlachodimos (own goal, 77) and Curtis Jones (83) sealing a 3-0 win for Lee Carsley’s much-changed side.

Venezuela 1-1 Brazil

Brazil’s stuttering World Cup qualifying campaign continues with a 1-1 draw against Venezuela.

Ederson and Savinho both started for the Seleção.

Savinho was bright and lively throughout the first period, almost claiming an assist when Vinicius Jr saw his effort hit the post.

Ederson was forced to make two important saves before Barcelona’s Raphinha curled a superb free-kick home just before the break at the  Estadio Monumental de Maturin.

However, within seconds of the restart, the hosts were level as second-half sub Segovia  smashed the ball past Ederson to make it 1-1 and send the home crowd wild.

Brazil missed a golden chance to regain the lead after Vinicius Jr won a penalty on 62 mins – but saw a tame effort saved by  Rafael Enrique Romo Pérez to keep the scores level.

Moments later, Ederson made another fine save from Bello as the game swung from one end to the other.

Savinho‘s evening ended when he was replaced by Luiz Henrique on 68 minutes.

In a bad tempered contest, Alexander González was sent off for Venezuela on 89 minutes.

Brazil couldn’t make their man advantage pay in the time that remained as Venezuela avoided defeat against the five-time world champions for the first time in 10 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier attempts on home soil.

Brazil remain in third spot in the table.
