‘Not Good Enough’ and Need to Sell: A £310,000-per-Week Arsenal Duo

Alan Brazil, a TalkSPORT analyst, has stated that he thinks Arsenal should cut both Thomas Partey and Jorginho if they hope to win the Premier League.

Last night, the Gunners lost to Inter Milan in the San Siro for the second time in a row, thanks to a penalty kick from Hakan Çalhanoğlu. As a result, since the October international break, Mikel Arteta’s team has only won once in five attempts.

Brazil blamed the aging midfield duo of Partey and Jorginho, who make a combined £310,000 a week, for some of the North Londoners’ recent shortcomings and inability to win significant hardware. Both players continue to play a significant role in Arteta’s team even though they are nearing the end of their careers. The former played the entire ninety minutes at the San Siro, while the latter was an unused substitute that evening.

Partey has played 129 games for Arsenal in just over four years since joining the Gunners for £45 million in September 2020 from Atletico Madrid. When healthy, the Ghanaian is a vital member of Arteta’s team, but his tenure in North London has been marred by injury problems.

In the meantime, Jorginho, who cost £12 million to acquire from London rivals Chelsea in January 2023, has contributed less frequently to Arteta. The Italian, who has only made 59 appearances in a red shirt, agreed to a one-year contract extension this summer.

Partey is still playing frequently, starting every league game so far this season, whereas Jorginho has only started two Premier League games and has been demoted to a more leadership position within Arteta’s team. Pundit Brazil stated on talkSPORT Thursday morning that Arsenal would be able to accomplish their goal of winning the league if they cut back on their reliance on the midfield pair and eliminated them entirely:

Given that the contracts of both players expire at the end of this season and there is little indication that Arsenal is considering extending either, it would seem that Arteta and the North London team will follow Brazil’s lead.
