San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is still on the injured reserve list – but that doesn’t mean he can’t still have fun off the field.

But, it’s unclear if the 28-year-old is actually having fun.

Dressed as the Tin Man for Halloween alongside wife Olivia Culpo, he barely cracked a smile while posing in his costume. Culpo, a model and influencer, is dressed as Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz.”

The Halloween-themed post on TikTok was cluttered with comments about fantasy football owners needing the All-Pro back on the field.

CMC has yet to make his 2024 season debut, sidelined because of Achilles tendonitis. According to 49ers general manager John Lynch, his practice window could open next week which means he could play in the team’s game on November 10 after their bye.

“The ideal scenario versus Tampa Bay is that he continues to—we keep using this terminology—but ramp up, which just means increase the volume of work that he’s doing,” Lynch said Wednesday morning on Bay Area radio station KNBR. “He’s been doing that, and he hasn’t had any setbacks. The hope is we take it up another notch this week. Provided that goes well, we’re kind of opening that window, allowing him to go back to practice. IR players can work to the side. They can’t get involved in practice. And so, Christian has been kind of on that plan.”

But, expectations have to be managed, Lynch said: “Now, just opening his window doesn’t mean he has to play. We have three weeks then, in which we can activate him, so we’ll play this by ear. We’ll listen to Christian, we’ll listen to the experts, and hopefully, very soon, he’s back playing with us on the field. And then, we’ve got to be judicious about how much we use him, and that’s a hard thing to do because he’s so darn good.”

Running backs Jordan Mason and rookie Isaac Guerendo have stepped up in McCaffrey’s absence. They average 159.0 rushing yards per game, which is third-best in the league.

But, the team would still like their star back. The No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft is one of three players ever to record 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, which he did in 2019. The offensive star was the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year, leading the league in touchdowns.

Even though the 49ers are averaging 26.3 points per game – eighth best in the league – they are just 4-4 and second in the NFC West.
