Instead of season-based awards, the trophy honors stars for their year-long accomplishments.
Formerly the FIFA World Player of the Year, it has been running since 2016. Due to their separate timeframes, players don’t usually win both.
Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or last month, and Erling Haaland are in contention.
Lionel Messi, who has won it twice before, is also eligible, but Cristiano Ronaldo is absent.
The nominees include Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, and Toni Kroos (retired), but they may not attend after skipping the Ballon d’Or event in October.
Florian Wirtz, Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga standout, and Barcelona and Spain wonderkid Lamine Yamal join them.
Goalkeepers get their own award. Alisson is absent, surprise. Ederson, Martinez, Raya, Maignan Nominated: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Yassine Bounou, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Yann Sommer, Andriy Lunin, Ronwen Williams.
Management nominees include Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, Spain’s Luis de la Fuente, Pep Guardiola, and Argentina’s Lionel Scaloni.
The first Premier League player to win the Ballon d’Or since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008, Rodri defeated Vinicius Jnr.
The prize was announced in France without Vinicius or Jude Bellingham, who finished third, because Real Madrid boycotted.
Many players criticized the announcement, but Rodri accepted the win despite his season being over.
He was out for months after tearing his ACL in September.
