Viktor Gyökeres has set his sights on a move to Manchester United after a heavy defeat, despite being pursued by Arsenal and Chelsea.
The Swedish forward is attracting interest from some of the world’s biggest clubs following an incredible run of form at Sporting Lisbon. In his first season with the Portuguese club, Gyökeres scored 43 goals in 50 appearances and is on track to exceed that total this term, having already netted 24 goals in just 19 games.
The 26-year-old, who was playing in the Championship with Coventry City less than 18 months ago, has also scored three hat-tricks this season, including one in the Champions League against Manchester City.
Manchester United have been linked with Gyökeres for months, with rumors intensifying after his manager left Sporting Lisbon to take over at Old Trafford. United have struggled with goal-scoring this season, and Marcus Rashford played as a striker in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge, ahead of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
Arsenal, facing their own issues in attack, were also linked with several strikers over the summer, including Alexander Isak of Newcastle, while Chelsea had been in pursuit of Victor Osimhen before a deal fell through on transfer deadline day.
With a release clause of just £65 million, Gyökeres is expected to draw significant interest ahead of the January window, and reports suggest he has his heart set on a move to Manchester United, according to The Sun. He is eager to join the Premier League and believes a reunion with Amorim at Old Trafford would be the best career move, even if it means turning down offers from Arsenal and Chelsea, both of which are higher in the table.
Gyökeres’ contributions helped Sporting Lisbon win the Primeira Liga last season, and the club currently holds a six-point lead at the top of the table, while sitting second in their Champions League group.
Former Premier League defender William Gallas is a big fan of Gyökeres and believes Arsenal have “no chance” of securing his signature. “He will choose Manchester United,” Gallas told Genting Casino. “He will follow Ruben Amorim to United, and I think he’d suit Arsenal’s team too.”
Ex-Premier League manager Tim Sherwood has also praised Gyökeres, calling him a “must” for Manchester United, who he believes lack attacking depth. “Gyökeres is a must for United,” Sherwood told Ladbrokes. “He knows English football, and he’s been brilliant in Portugal, especially in the Champions League. United desperately need a striker, and right now they have just one: Rasmus Hojlund. Gyökeres would improve that team massively, though he comes with a hefty buyout clause.”
