Luis Gil was named Baseball Digest’s American League Rookie of the Year on Thursday.
The starting pitcher earned the honor after going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 29 starts during the regular season for the New York Yankees. He filled into a starting rotation spot to start the season when Gerrit Cole went down with an injury in Spring Training. Gil remained in the rotation all season long and even made multiple appearances in the playoffs for the Bronx Bombers.
Gil had the most wins, and innings pitched, and was tied for the most strikeouts in the AL among rookie pitchers. His 3.1 WAR also trumps all other rookie pitchers in the American League.
Gil’s biggest issue during the season was limiting his walks. He led the majors with 77 free passes allowed.
The righty is expected to be one of the Yankees’ starting rotation pieces in 2025. The team also has Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, Carlos Rodón, and Marcus Stroman under contract. The Bronx Bombers have also been linked to many of the top free-agent pitchers available including Corbin Burnes, Clarke Schmidt, and Blake Snell.
Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates was named Baseball Digest’s National League Rookie of the Year.
Gunnar Henderson and Corbin Carroll were named Rookies of the Year in 2023, and both players went on to earn the award from the BBWAA as well in their respective leagues.
The winners of the BBWAA Rookie of the Year Awards for 2024 will be announced on Nov. 18.
