One New York Yankees fan got into it with Mookie Betts on Tuesday night. A photo of the scene could not have captured the moment more perfectly.
The Los Angeles Dodgers led the Yankees 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning in Game 4 of the World Series at Yankees Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. Betts had a beat on a Gleyber Torres foul ball headed into foul territory. But when the Dodgers outfielder leaped to make the catch, the Yankees fan grabbed Betts’ glove and didn’t let go until the ball was dislodged. (video here).
The renowned X account “ArtButMakeItSports” wasted no time finding the perfect work of art that matched Betts’ struggle with the fan. The account juxtaposed a photo of the fan interference with Jacob Franquart’s 1616 painting “The Angel Restrains Abraham from Sacrificing Isaac.” The post quickly went viral on X.
The Yankees fan gained immediate notoriety for his encounter with Betts. But that didn’t save him from getting kicked out of his seat at Yankee Stadium.
While the Dodgers did get the out due to fan interference, the Yankees came alive during the next few innings. The Bronx Bombers erupted for an 11-4 win to keep their season alive for at least one more game.
Seven different Yankees recorded a hit and all but Anthony Rizzo reached base safely. The bottom of the order surprisingly led the scoring load with seven of the team’s 11 RBIs, led by Anthony Volpe’s grand slam in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
