Dodgers’ Andrew Friedman Gave Epic Quote After Tommy Edman Won NLCS MVP

Call Andrew Friedman a prophet. Or at least a great comedian.

The Los Angeles Dodgers president of baseball operations joked on Sunday that he said “NLCS MVP or bust” when the team acquired Tommy Edman at the 2024 MLB trade deadline. On Sunday, Edman officially became the National League Championship Series MVP as the Dodgers defeated the New York Mets to advance to the World Series.

Edman was not even on the team when the Dodgers began the season. Even after they traded for him, he was still injured, and could not make an impact immediately for the team. He had not played at all until he was traded to the Dodgers. The Dodgers had spent over a billion dollars during the offseason to bring them back to the World Series, and yet one of their best additions came in the middle of the season.

“When we got him, we said ‘NLCS MVP or bust.’ So fortunately, we don’t bust,” Friedman joked.

Edman has been incredible in the postseason, hitting .341 so far. He recorded at least one hit in every game of the NLCS, and two hits in each of the last three games of the series. His play made the Dodgers move him to fourth in the lineup, and he came through in that position. During Game 6 of the NLCS, with the Dodgers trailing 1-0 early in the game, Edman doubled to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. He added to the Dodgers’ lead, hitting a two-run home run in the third inning.

“Early in the year, I never thought I would be in this situation today,” Edman said, via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. “Everything lined up for me to be on this team and have the success that we’ve had. Now we’re going to the World Series. It’s crazy.”

Edman has recorded 15 hits, six runs, one home run, and 12 RBIs over the postseason, with four RBIs in the game to clinch the series for the Dodgers.

“It’s a crazy trajectory. I can’t say enough about the front office being able to acquire him at the deadline,” manager Dave Roberts said. “What he can do for us on the field, in the clubhouse, it’s just amazing. I never imagined once we acquired him, he’d be hitting fourth in a postseason game. But I trust him. The guys trust him. He’s made huge defensive plays for us and had huge hits. Just very fortunate to have a player like Tommy.”
