Red Sox Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez looks to first base in the fifth inning during Game 2 of the ALCS against the Yankees in 2004.SL<\/span><\/p>\n The Boston Red Sox broke their 86-year World Series drought in 2004 despite the\u00a0New York Yankees\u2019 best efforts on the field \u2014 and, allegedly, off of it, too.<\/p>\n According to Red Sox legends Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling in a new Netflix documentary, \u201cThe Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox,\u201d the Yankees bugged the visitor\u2019s clubhouse before Game 2 of the AL Championship Series. This is the first time these claims have been made public, 20 years after the series.<\/p>\n \u201cSomething was going on…,\u201d\u00a0Martinez said in Episode 3, per Mass Live. \u201cI remember before the game, getting up to the ceiling of the clubhouse and pulling out a microphone and I guess, a little device, that was relaying our conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI know the difference between a microphone and not a microphone and this was like a lapel mic,\u201d Schilling continued. \u201cIt was attached to a little box with the red light on.<\/p>\n The Red Sox won the ALCS in seven games, but they lost Games 1 and 2 in New York. Martinez was the losing pitcher in Game 2 against Jon Lieber, the 3-1 win giving the Yankees their second series victory as they jumped out to a 3-0 series lead before blowing it all.<\/p>\n Colin Barnicle, a former Red Sox intern and diehard fan, was the series director. He told\u00a0The Boston Globe that these allegations \u201ccame up organically.\u201d<\/p>\n Joe Torre, the Yankees’ manager at the time, wholeheartedly denied the accusations in the series.<\/p>\n \u201c(Expletive). I say it didn\u2019t happen,\u201d\u00a0Torre said, per Boston.com. \u201cAnd if it did happen, we didn\u2019t get the benefit of a microphone, someone else did.\u201d<\/p>\n The three-part series that lasts around three hours required 12-14 hours of work per day for six months, according to Barnicle in\u00a0Mass Live\u2019s podcast, \u201cFenway Rundown,\u201d that released Tuesday.<\/p>\n He told Mass Live that Martinez and Schilling weren\u2019t the only people with the accusations. (For what it\u2019s worth, ex-shortstop Nomar Garciaparra did not participate in the documentary.)<\/p>\n \u201cPedro was the last to be interviewed (in June), so originally, that section had several players in it,\u201d\u00a0Barnicle said on the podcast. \u201cWe heard from Bronson Arroyo and Doug Mirabelli and Curt Schilling and most of the pitchers. They were like, \u2018Yeah, no, that happened. We pulled a microphone down.\u2019 Then they had their team meetings \u2014 the pitcher team meetings, on the team bus. They would walk outside and have it on the team bus. …<\/p>\n \u201cThe proof\u2019s kind of in the pudding that maybe that didn\u2019t really lead to anything. Maybe it did.
