The Phoenix Suns are playing some fine basketball right now and there is no shame in losing to them in a close contest. But considering how things played out on the night, the Miami Heat should have won.
The Heat were leading by 15 points at one point in the game but collapsed once again, as the Suns ultimately won 115-112.
The Heat had the last possession of the game and even got a decent chance to take it to overtime. But Jimmy Butler made a bizarre decision with the ball in his hands and the clock ticking down.
Butler got a decent enough look from three but with less than a second left on the clock, he decided to pass the ball to Tyler Herro instead of taking the shot himself.
Yes, Herro was having a great scoring night and ended it 5-9 from three. But he did not have nearly enough time to execute anything at that point.
It was a decision that confused Heat fans and not one you expect from the team’s superstar. Butler himself took full responsibility after the game.
According to Anthony Chiang on X, Butler said regarding the final possession: “I should have just pulled back and shot it. We kind of knew where it was going. My turnover, I got to shoot that one.”
Most Heat fans have been left disappointed with Butler’s performance so far this season. He was expected to put up career-best numbers as he looks for one last big contract in the NBA.
Instead, Butler has looked shaky. His shooting numbers have not been good and while he has had good games here and there, overall, he has not looked anywhere near his best.
If things continue on like this, it is hard to imagine that many teams around the league would be ready to hand him a max deal if he were to turn down his player option and become a free agent next summer.
