The Miami Dolphins made a predictable move two weeks ago signing quarterback CJ Beathard to the practice squad to give them depth at the position. He won’t stay in Miami for long.
On Wednesday, a day after the trade deadline, the Jacksonville Jaguars poached Beathard and signed him off the Dolphins’ practice squad to their active 53-man roster. There’s nothing the Dolphins can do about it, since practice squad players are mostly free agents.
CJ Beathard was a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, so he knows Mike McDaniel’s system pretty well. He spent the last three seasons with the Jaguars, and now he’s back there to be the third-string quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence and Mac Jones.
Moving forward
The big problem for the Dolphins is that they only have Tua Tagovailoa and Skylar Thompson at quarterback now. Both are on the 53-man roster. The team had signed Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad back in September, but he is now on the injured reserve.
The most logical move would be bringing back veteran Tim Boyle, who spent most of this season on the PS and even appeared in two games, against the Seattle Seahawks in week 3 and the Indianapolis Colts in week 7.
Outside of Ryan Tannehill, who would sign for this type of deal, the best free agent options for the Dolphins at the position would be Blaine Gabbert, Ben DiNucci, and Matt Barkley.
The Dolphins are 2-6 this season, which includes two losses since Tua Tagovailoa returned from his concussion. On Monday night, the team faces the Los Angeles Rams in California trying to save its season.
