Shock Inter Miami renewal clause revealed in Messi contract
According to AS, Inter Miami are already negotiating with Messi to extend his stay in Fort Lauderdale until December 2026.
Inter Miami are steadily working on “Project Messi”. According to sources at AS, the Argentine star has had an offer on the table to extend his contract until December 2026 “for weeks,” which would add another year to his stay in Miami.
Although nothing has been finalised yet, it seems likely that the World Cup champion will extend his stay in the United States. Since his arrival in June 2023, Messi has sparked a frenzy across the country. He is a crucial asset for both MLS and soccer in general.
Following Luis Suárez’s contract extension until December 2025, it’s now Messi’s turn. The arrival of Javier Mascherano as the new head coach strengthens the core of the team, which includes former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. Additionally, the new deal might include the possibility of Messi serving as an ambassador for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Negotiations with Messi underway
Jorge Mas, co-owner of the American franchise, has already expressed his dream of “having Messi until 2026,” and it seems close to becoming a reality. Although negotiations are still in their early stages, there is no indication that an agreement won’t be reached. Messi is the key figure for MLS, and his continued presence is vital for both the league and Apple TV, which holds the broadcasting rights.
Messi’s journey in Fort Lauderdale has been a smooth one, from winning the Leagues Cup last season to securing the Supporters’ Shield (the trophy for the best regular-season team) this season. Despite injuries, the Argentine has had an outstanding individual campaign. With 21 goals and 11 assists in 22 MLS matches, Messi is the frontrunner for the season’s MVP award.
Staying in MLS will help Messi stay in top form for the next World Cup. Although he has hinted at international retirement, coach Scaloni is counting on him to defend the World Cup title. Messi will turn 39 just before the tournament, with nothing left to prove and only the joy of participating in what could be the final World Cup of his illustrious career.
