Gabriel’s message to Viktor Gyokeres and four other things you may have missed from Sporting CP vs Arsenal
Arsenal stunned Sporting with a 5-1 win thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard.
Arteta’s transfer target Viktor Gyokeres was the talk of the town before the game however, it was the visitors who stole the headlines in front of goal after 90 minutes.
Five things you might have missed from Arsenal win vs Sporting CP
The five goals were unmissable as Arsenal ran riot against the Portuguese champions, something that very few would have expected.
It was only on match day four of the Champions League that Sporting beat Manchester City 4-1, emphasising the superiority of the Gunners on Tuesday night.
From goal celebrations to chaos in the stands, here’s five things you might have missed from Arsenal’s brilliance in Lisbon.
Gabriel Martinelli dedicates goal to Kai Havertz
It was a night of goals and, a night of bold celebrations.
The first goal was scored by Martinelli, who dedicated his goal to Havertz after reeling off to celebrate with creator Jurrien Timber.
The Brazilian was spotted doing Havertz’s trademark celebration after opening the scoring, something he also did at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.
Eddie Nketiah’s 350-day record ended
The North Londoners had to wait a while to win on the road in Europe, with the same instance coming in the goals department.
Martinelli’s goal was Arsenal’s first European away goal in 350 days, as the winger scored in the sixth minute of play.
Eddie Nketiah was the last player to score in Europe on the road for Arteta’s side, finding the net in a 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven in December 2023.
Gabriel’s swipe at Viktor Gyokeres
Martinelli’s celebration dedicated to Havertz warmed hearts but it wasn’t the best reaction of the night.
Gabriel headed Arsenal 3-0 up just before half-time and celebrated his goal cheekily, copying Gyokeres’ famed mask celebration.
Fans latched on to Gabriel mocking Gyokeres quickly, as the centre-back sent the Sweden international a strong message during the European clash.
Sporting CP fans show their love for fireworks
There was a moment of fear that play would be stopped in the first half as Sporting CP fans let off a mass of fireworks behind David Raya’s goal.
Arsenal fans’ view was clouded by a green mist as a result, which the joyous travelling supporters embraced, singing “We want more fireworks,” as the Gunners went in 3-0 ahead at the interval.
William Saliba writes himself into history
It was a night to cherish for Arsenal as a collective and even more so for William Saliba, who recorded his 100th appearance for the club.
Saliba wrote himself into Arsenal history by becoming only the sixth player to reach 65 or more wins from his opening century of fixtures.
The defender will be delighted with his team and his individual performance against Sporting, keeping Gyokeres on lock for 90 minutes.
